In today’s rapidly evolving workplace landscape, fostering an inclusive organizational culture is paramount for success. While many organisations understand the value of diversity and inclusion, they struggle to find ways to effectively harness the power of these principles to drive meaningful change within their organizations.
In this article, we, Irene Gleirscher and Margret Steixner show how Appreciative Inquiry can help create an inclusive organizational culture. We present our well proven workshop format and encourage you to consider how it could be implemented in your organization. This format is based on over a decade of experience from our „Harvesting Workshops“ with SOS Children’s Villages International.
At its core, Appreciative Inquiry (AI) is a transformative approach that focuses on what works well within an organization and seeks to amplify those strengths. It’s about shifting our mindset from problem-solving to solution-building, from deficit-based thinking to strengths-based thinking. During the described workshop this approach truly came to life.
Impressions from the workshop
Imagine a week-long gathering of employees from across the globe, all coming together to share their stories, dreams, and aspirations for the organization. The workshop participants group, composed of staff members from 135+ countries and from a variety of functions was a unique opportunity to tap into the collective wisdom of the organisation and harness the power of diversity to drive innovation and positive change.
How can your organization benefit from a Workshop that is inspired by Appreciative Inquiry?
Here are just a few ways:
Fostering inclusion and belonging: By bringing together employees from diverse backgrounds and perspectives, the Workshop creates a sense of belonging and unity within the organization. It celebrates the unique contributions of each individual and promotes a culture of inclusion where every voice is heard and valued.
Driving innovation and creativity: Through storytelling, dialogue, and collaboration, participants are empowered to think outside the box and explore new possibilities for growth and development. The workshop serves as a catalyst for innovation, sparking new ideas and solutions that can propel your organization forward.
Experience participation and collaboration: By fostering open communication, trust and collaboration, workshop participants experience how positive team dynamics enhance performance. Participants learn to appreciate each other’s strengths and use them to achieve common goals, resulting in greater synergy and productivity.
Enhancing employee engagement and satisfaction: By providing employees with a platform to share their stories, dreams, and aspirations, the workshop fosters a sense of ownership and pride in the organization. Employees feel valued and respected, leading to higher levels of engagement, satisfaction, and retention.

Let’s dig a bit deeper into the workshop methodology.
The flow of the workshop is designed around the 4-D cycle. The 4-D cycle is a core element of the Appreciative Inquiry approach developed by David Cooperrider, Diana Whitney and others.

Discovery: Uncovering the Gems Within
The journey begins with discovery—a deep dive into the rich tapestry of experiences that make up your organization. Participants are invited to share moments of „flow“—those times when they felt most engaged, energized, and fulfilled in their work. Through storytelling and guided reflection, they uncover hidden gems of knowledge, expertise, and insight that can often go unnoticed in day-to-day operations.
Dream: Envisioning a Brighter Future
With these discoveries in hand, participants are encouraged to dream big about the future of the organization. What could be possible if we were to fully leverage our strengths and resources? What are our aspirations for the organization, and how can we make them a reality? The dream phase is all about tapping into the collective imagination of the workshop group, that really represents the diversity of the organisation. Together they envision a future that inspires and they burn for.
Design: Turning Dreams into Action
But dreaming alone is not enough. In the design phase, participants roll up their sleeves and start turning their dreams into actionable plans. Like architects of change, they identify concrete steps and strategies for bringing their vision to life. This is where the magic happens—where ideas take shape, and plans are put into motion.
Destiny: Empowering Action and Accountability
Finally, in the destiny phase, participants take ownership of their plans and commit to taking action. They identify key partners, resources, and support systems needed to bring their vision to fruition. And perhaps most importantly, they hold themselves and each other accountable for driving progress and achieving results.
But the impact of the weekly gathering in this specific group doesn’t end there. Participants return to their organizations equipped with new insights, ideas, and strategies for fostering a culture of inclusion and innovation. They become ambassadors for change, inspiring others to embrace the principles of Appreciative Inquiry and unlock their full potential.
In conclusion, the Appreciative Inquiry Workshop offers a powerful tool for transforming organizations from within. By embracing the principles of Appreciative Inquiry and harnessing the power of diversity, we can create workplaces that are not only inclusive and innovative but also vibrant, resilient, and future-ready.
